WhenEarth

About this project

WhenEarth is an interactive 3D globe that lets you scrub through 750 million years of Earth's history — watch continents drift, ice sheets advance and retreat, and climate shift across deep time.

I'm a data scientist who started this in June 2025. It took about ten months of texture rendering, climate-curve fitting from peer-reviewed sources, and a lot of late nights to get every period scientifically grounded. It's free, has no ads, and runs out of my home lab.

Built on data from

Foster et al. 2017 — CO₂
Westerhold 2020 — temp
Berner GEOCARB III
ICE-6G_C — ice sheets
NASA Blue Marble
ETOPO1 topography

If WhenEarth taught you something, made you curious, or you just enjoyed scrubbing through the Cretaceous for fun, a coffee helps cover hosting and keeps me building. Next on the roadmap: mass-extinction overlays, sharper CO₂/temperature visualizations, and more paleogeographic detail.
